Sometimes the most amazing finishes to a game seem so unbelievable that everyone remains in a state of shock until they can figure out what actually happened.

That is exactly what happened last night in the game between the Washington Capitals and the New York Rangers when Joel Ward tallied the winner with 1.4 seconds last night.

While I picked the Rangers to return to the Stanley Cup Finals again this year – last night’s results on the last play of the game may be the defining moment in the series.

Yes its the first game, but what happened was significant.

Some folks say that ‘each goal counts the same on the scoreboard’. Technically yes……but there are goals …….and then there are GOALS.

Two GOALS were scored last night that asserted that the big man, Alexandre Ovechkin, came to play this year in the playoffs. A laser guided missile of a wrist shot early in the game …and an amazing one handed, right hand pass on a misdirection play from behind the net to Ward for the winner.

Yes – CBC interviewed Joel Ward after the game because he scored the winner……but these were both Ovie’s goals!

The goal killed not just because it was scored but equally important because it came after a play that knocked out New York’s key defencemen, Dan Boyle  – who has already won a Stanley Cup – on the  same play sequence.

One leader asserted his supremacy last night while another may have been rendered harmless.
