You see them there. Walking into the donut shops of your community. In and out of home improvement stores, kids in tow – jumping up and down trying to get their attention – wanting some treat, or some new toy. They, the lonely, the forlorn, walking aimlessly, heedless to the calls of their children, forging ahead with blank stares as they fumble to find the keys of their gray mini -vans.

These are the ‘Dads of Costco’.

They come home to eat large bags of chips, or throw a big spoonful of mustard from a bucket onto their hotdogs. They drop big packages of batteries on their toes before heading outside to put together a new barbecue …..they got for oh….for oh ….such a good price. They can hardly wait to show their buddies telling them where they bought it (do they really need to tell?)…..but unable to describe the location in the store or  give them the confidence they might actually be in stock.

You see them gather in your communities at the dollar stores looking for cheap – er… inexpensive anniversary cards for their wives to go with the brand new staple gun they are offering for their 12th wedding anniversary celebration. You see them wearing their shirts with horizontal blue, black and gray lines that emphasize the width of their life experiences, their non-descript industrial strength blue jeans with waist sizes bigger than the leg….sporting the latest fashion offering from the crack team of designers from the Kirkland fashion house.

The ‘Dads of Costco’ …..they carry the weight of their idealism on their shoulders and the weight of a society struggling to achieve the high ideals of the Happy Days generation on the balls of their feet. Remember them – think of them – honour them – they are the ‘Dads of Costco’ ….and while they may never remember………. we must never forget!
